Sutton Fairness Commission: Community involvement for people with a learning disability

Sutton's Fairness Commission brings together local public and voluntary organisations to explore the experiences of different communities in Sutton. Its overall aim is to ensure that the benefits of living in Sutton are enjoyed by all sections of society.

On behalf of the Fairness Commission, Community Action Sutton, Sutton Mencap and Sutton Parent Carer Forum are carrying out a review of the day-to-day experiences of people with a learning disability when out and about in the community in Sutton.  We want to gather feedback from young people and adults with a learning disability as well as their families.  We want to know about the day-to-day activities you like to do and how easy it is for you to do them.  We want to use this feedback to highlight where inclusion is working well as well as understanding the barriers to participation and what could be done to overcome them.

We would love  parent carers to use this form to complete a diary entry, telling us about your experiences.  You can tell us about anything from special events and days out to the everyday activities you do.  You can use this form to complete as many diary entries as you wish to - just use a different page for each event or activity.

The diary entries will be anonymous, although you can provide your name and contact details if you would like a follow up discussion with the Parent Carer Forum Steering Group to talk through your experience in more detail. Apart from that, any information you give will only be used for the purpose of this project.  Any comments you make may be used in the Fairness Commission's report, but anything that could make it possible for someone to identify a specific individual will not be used.

The survey is available at https://forms.gle/89GEYnGmYM67SQkx5.  The closing date for responses is 15th February 2023.

9.1.23  Parks and playgrounds update

Our report, based on your feedback, has been shared with the Council and Members and we are now in a position to discuss exactly what equipment would be appropriate for a new, exclusive SEND playground. Please join us and the Parks Department from 12.45pm until 2pm on Wednesday 11th January at Playwise, in Sutton Civic Centre. This is your opportunity to design the new playground!

5.9.22

Summer consultation for SEND families on using Sutton's parks and playgrounds

After recent feedback from parent carers, who explained the difficulties they were encountering when trying to use Sutton's parks and playgrounds, we compiled a short survey which we asked you to complete over the summer.  Thank you so much to the 95 parent carers who took the time to complete our survey. We have used this anonymised feedback to produce this report and we are sharing this with Councillors and the Local Authority with the request that we present this to the next People Committee. 58 of you included your contact details so that you can contribute to our Focus Groups and work to improve the parks and playgrounds for our children and young people; thank you!

We will, of course, also be sharing this with the South London Cluster Group of Parent Carer Forums of which we are a member and the NNPCF.
